New Haryana Scheme To Promote Sports
By saakshi, Section Fun & Games Posted on Sat Aug 28, 2010 at 01:25:32 AM EST
The Haryana Government has launched an ambitious scheme to promote and help young men pursue a career in sports. `Play4India', a Haryana Government-supported initiative, aims at enabling young boys and girls in the State to get an idea of their athletic potential and subsequently encourage and support them to hone their skills.
Fitness is the core of this campaign and the additional advantage is that if an individual qualifies with 75% + in Sports & Physical Aptitude Test (SPAT), he or she would get a grant from the Haryana Government. The process for choosing is SPAT, a one-of-its kind campaign. The scheme involves seven standardised tests: battery-vertical jump, ball throw, broad jump, bend-&-reach, 30-metre flying, 6X10 shuttle and 800 metre race.
The initiative has been well received and the first test attracted 46,000 boys and girls in the age group of 8 to 19 years and 1,600 candidates qualified. Under the scheme, a fitness-based monthly incentive of Rs.2,000 will be provided to athletes in the age group of 14 to 19 and Rs.1,500 in the age group of 8 to 14.
Says Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, "Our State has a very high playground density with 345 stadiums, most of them at block and village levels. We wanted to engage our young men in constructive activities and sports seemed to be a perfect choice."
The campaign is claimed to be corruption-free. "We wanted to build an efficient, corruption-free delivery system. People have liked our direct-to-athlete approach. It's about conditional cash transfer in the form of sports scholarship provided the beneficiary athlete comes to the playground 22 days a month and stays away from drugs and anti-social behaviour. We are introducing SPAT in all schools across the State, private as well as government, and hoping to take the participation figure to near 20 lakh," says Mr. Hooda.

Club Culture Taking Off In Gurgaon
By ugesh sarkar, Section Fun & Games Posted on Thu May 13, 2010 at 03:43:58 AM EST
Club' is a term usually applied to a particular organization of people who are tied with a common interest or goal. This concept of club culture in India is a legacy of its colonial past for it is the British who introduced club culture in India and Gurgaon can now boast of a host of premiere social clubs. Club culture preserves the old world to some extent but their Indianization is also complete now. They are now hubs of fun and recreation.
Vandana and her family are all praise for the DLF City Club and tell us just how much fun they have catching up with friends and enjoying cuisines in the club on many occasions. GM Raman Khanna agrees that he and his team make sure that they not only maintain the existing infrastructure, but also continuously plan for better facilities, more exciting themes and different cuisines.
Ritu is not a very active club member since her busy schedule makes it rather difficult to squeeze regular time but she is rather glad that her teenage son is able to derive the maximum benefit and pleasure by indulging in regular tennis or squash followed by an energizing drink and appetizing snacks. As a family, they enjoy musical evenings and feel comfortable in the knowledge that this a suitably safe hangout for their youngsters.
She mentions how clubs have recently become extremely popular for holding birthday parties since it provides ample space for kids to run around eat, drink and have a fun time. Many clubs also encourage coaching classes, be it swimming, Salsa or tennis and this ensures that Sunita gets to spend quality time with her husband at the bar upstairs where they get moments of peace and catch up on the day, while the older lot catches a game of tambola with friends! While youngsters enjoy the bar with their famous kebabs for company, many a businessmen settle crucial deals in these very precincts.

Let Dreams Soar At This Flying Club Near Gurgaon
By akansha, Section Fun & Games Posted on Sun Jan 31, 2010 at 10:21:16 PM EST
Delhi might not have a fully operational flying club any longer but if you're willing to drive about a 100 km out of town, you will find a brand new aero sports club in Mahendragarh, Haryana.
On Sunday, while paragliding, parasailing, skydiving and hot-air ballooning took place all around him, Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda announced the opening of the Rajiv Gandhi National Centre for Aero Sports at Bachhaud air strip near Narnaul, Mahendragarh. The centre will work towards giving youngsters a platform from which to understand the science of aviation, and also to get up close and personal with the more adventurous side of aviation.
Captain Satish Sharma, chairman of the Aero Club of India, stood side by side with the CM as the aero centre was declared open.
The centre, named after late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, has been set up by the Department of Civil Aviation, Haryana, in collaboration with the Aero Club of India. The centre will be developed along international lines and, it is hoped, will help give a fillip to India's participation at world aero sports events. Up to now our participation in such events has been woefully limited.
Sanction has already been given for the purchase of an ultra-modern, multi-engine simulator at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore to help better training facilities at Karnal. It has also been proposed that a flying training academy be set up in the state. In addition, air strips at Pinjore, Narnaul, Hisar and Bhiwani will be further developed.
The centre, it is planned, will provide cheap training and facilities to the people who cannot afford it by charging more from the people who can afford it and who dabble in aero sports as a hobby.
