Be it Old Delhi or New Delhi or any smaller suburban railway station like Gurgaon, passengers are subjected to sights of garbage strewn on platforms and tracks. Evidently, the Indian Railways seem to be totally alien to cleanliness. A visit to the stations revealed false claims and an archaic system at work.
A case in point is Old Delhi railway station. As you enter the station building, a clean platform greets you. A man using an automatic wiper machine is seen sweeping the floor. But as you move towards the end of the station, platforms are a picture of neglect.
- Garbage is strewn across the platforms and on tracks.
- Of course people are to blame as orange peels, polyethene bags and everything is conveniently dropped where they are sitting.
- However, no system for fining them for littering or for cleaning on a regular basis has been developed.
At Old Delhi and New Delhi stations, there are no signages declaring any fines to be levied.
And the sight on the railway tracks in the morning - what else can be said?
