Literacy India, A NGO Based in Palam Vihar, Gurgaon, Changing Life of Over 800 Haryana Kids
By Sanjay Sharma, Section Sector 23/ Palam Vihar Posted on Sun Nov 21, 2004 at 04:34:47 AM EST
Literacy India is an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) started by Capt Indrani Singh, an IA pilot, Air Marshal Denzil Keelor and a few others in Palam Vihar. You ask Indrani which is more difficult — flying an Airbus-300 or trying to get a literacy programme off the ground? The latter, she asserts. For the poor children in the villages around Palam, India is truly Shining because of efforts of people like her. For the parents of the children, mainly daily wage labourers, it's been a godsend. Some of the children have been employed by corporates, hotels and export houses, earning Rs 2,000-3,000 a month. The ride, rough and bumpy at times, has been worth it for this pilot.
It all started in 1996 when Indrani got her command. "I had achieved all that I wanted to; I started getting fidgety and wanted to do something extra." She realised education was what the country most needed. They started small — with just five children. The NGO now has close to 800 children in various projects in Haryana.
- In the beginning, for most children it was good enough to be able to just sign their names. "Roti, kapda and makaan issues subsumed them."
- Now 'presidential' issues beckon them — going to Rashtrapati Bhawan, NSD and Shri Ram Centre to show their histrionic talents, having friendly matches with other NGOs and vocational classes. Last year, 35 of them performed a play before President Kalam.
Garnering money for her NGO wasn't easy. Indrani and a few others put some of their own money into it along with corporate donations. She did paintings and money from the sales was put into the NGO. And time? "When you want to do something, time is not a deterrent," she says purposefully.
