Hathway Cable Internet In Mumbai Launches New Broadband Package - 512 Kb For Rs 250 Per Month

By Sanjay Sharma, Section Internet Service Providers
Posted on Mon Nov 08, 2004 at 11:08:09 PM EST

Mumbai, Nov 8. (PTI): Internet Service Provider (ISP) Hathway Cable Internet today launched a new broadband package, 'Silver Super Rush', which provides high-speed Internet connectivity of up to 512 kbps for Rs 250 per month. A Rajan Raheja group company, Hathway offers broadband Internet services in eight cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune. Anyone know details of their offer, and whether they have similar plans for Gurgaon?

The new package is designed to give an enhanced online experience where the user would be able to access the Internet and its applications faster, Hathway Cable Internet said in a meeting. The package, which is a pre-paid and annual scheme, would help in strengthening the company's broadband operations, it said.

Gurgaon Telecom (none / 0) (#2)

Should have looked up Google before asking. To answer myself, yes, Gurgaon Telecom is indeed part of BSNL.

Their internet services are offered by Sanchar Net. Tarrifs for ISDN and dial up packages. Very expensive. And then you need a BSNL telephone connection as well.

Hathway Vs. Touchtel (none / 0) (#1)
by Manu Sharma on Wed Nov 10, 2004 at 10:57:55 AM EST

I did call them up about a months or so back when this news first came out. The person I spoke with said they had no immediate plans to offer services in Gurgaon. [Delhi numbers: 26160236/247 and 9604-800-000].

The 512kbps plan at Rs.250 sounds really attractive but it does come with a download limit of 2.4GB with every additional download costing a prohibitive Rs.2/mb. Based on my current monthly consumption [1.5GB at 128kbps] I estimate that at such high speed, even if I dont download movies my monthly quota will be close to 3GB. Effectively costing me Rs.1450 [250+1200] per month. That's a bad bargain if you ask me, particularly because I'll still have to limit my downloads. What good is a high speed connection if can't download movies!!

I recently switched to Touchtel's Home64 plan which gives a 64kbps connection at unlimited download. This costs me Rs700/month. Same plan with Hathway will cost me over Rs.4100 and there's an additional Rs.5000 subscription fee.

Their 512kbps plan with no limits on usage costs a whopping Rs.30,000/- [correct number of zeros!] per month!!

They have actually ridiculous download limits on most of their plans. And those with unlimited downloads are ridiculously expensive :-). This is fine of course if all you want to do is check your email. But if you're a serious user of the internet, its better to stick with Tochtel as of now.

Compare the broadband packages of Hathway and Touchtel.

I also heard about Gurgaon Telecom launching cheap broadband services that they've so far been testing at Sushant Lok. Is Gurgaon Telecom part of BSNL? Anyone knows anything about this?

I fully agree Re: Hathway Vs. Touchtel (none / 0) (#3)

The key to increasing broadband acceptance and customer satisfaction is not to impose these ridiculous limits on the downloads.
  • The whole point of broadband (in addition to 24 hr connectivity) is the fact that it opens a whole new world in songs, movies, news videos, and you can download tons and tons of free and shareware software - whether games or productivity related. There are literally 100,000 + pieces of excelent software, and billions of songs, and thousands of movies - just waiting to be downloaded. And making another copy cost literally nothing in terms of the physical resources. So, yes broadband has to have decent limits of downloads, and also a reasonable structure of tarriff for that.

  • Looking at my own usage I use have used about 2-5 to 10 GB per month, with the median being around 6 GB. If I can download at a faster rate I would defintely need higher limits. There are tons of things, and many impulse downloads, that I don't make because of the slow connection. For example, the whole movie Farenheit is now legally available for download for free - 780 MB. If you have fast broadband why should you have to pay at Rs 2 per MB - meaning around Rs 1,600 to download this just ONE film?

All this is made worse by the govt regulators who impose controls on the marketplace that are out-of-touch with reality in terms of the conditions needed to exapand markets and innovation.

But, I can definitely say that I am happy with our local providers in Sector 23/Palam Vihar, Gurgaon, - CnC cable Internet - they have no limits and provide decent packages from Rs 600-1000 depending on how many connections you have at the same premises. Speed is slow, just a little better than broadband, but they have excellent service. As they have a 24 hr cybercafe so generally getting someone on the line even very very late in the night is possible ... And I must say again that the unlimited bandwidth is their most attractive offering. Everytime I see * on the ads for all  these broadband companies where they point out the download limits - it makes me physically sick.

Very good summary of the broadband reality in India, Sanjay. I'm hopeful of the future though. Broadband costs have only one direction to go, downwards. Remember how expensive dial-up was when it first arrived?

I'm actually also hoping that WiMax becomes a reality soon. Wi-Max is the next wi-fi, the big difference though is that it's like wi-fi for the whole town! With coverage ranging from 5, 10 to upto 30km!! But its far from reality...as standards are being written and research being conducted. They say, it'll start to appear by mid 2005 in US but we can expect serious commercial launches only by 2006. And we still dont know if it'll really work.

Good news for folks in India is that Reliance is already working with Intel, which is behind the Wimax initiative. A few months back there were even reports that Reliance was conducting some pilots in Mumbai.

You can learn more about Wi-max here.
