The ongoing construction of a flyover and heavy traffic heading towards Dhaula Kuan and Jaipur has made crossing IFFCO Chowk a nightmare for commuters. Over 9,000 vehicles cross the junction everyday from the four approach roads -- Dhaula Kuan, Mehrauli, Jaipur and the old city.
- Drivers stop and cross the intersection at will as the traffic signal and other signages have been removed due to the construction.
- Bus drivers flout rules and obstruct traffic by letting commuters embark in the middle of the road.
- The absence of policemen to regulate the traffic flow only adds to the chaos. Said Suman Sahgal, a resident of DLF: ``There is complete chaos at IFFCO Chowk during peak hours. A single traffic constable posted at the intersection is unable to manage the mammoth traffic.'' Added Madhu Walia, a commuter: ``There have been instances when not even a single constable was present to control the heavy rush. Due to the absence of signages, commuters are at a loss as to which road to take.'' Vikram Kapoor, Superintendent of Police (traffic), clarified: ``The intersection is manned by five constables who work in four shifts from 8 am to 8 pm and then till 1 am.''
The officials at NHAI said: ``Due to the inability to acquire a piece of land from the Airport Authority of India (AAI), the planned diversion cannot be implemented.''
