DLF Plans To Create The "World's Biggest Mall" in Gurgaon, The City Of Malls

By Unregistered Visitors, Section Mall Culture in Gurgaon
Posted on Wed Jun 22, 2005 at 12:14:15 AM EST

This story has appeared in today's Times of India as well as today's Hindustan Times in Delhi.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1148973.cms

Prabhakar Sinha writes in the Times of India Gurgaon is set to get the mother of all malls a humungous 40-lakh sq ft sprawling property that is being touted by its developer DLF Universal as the biggest mall of the world.

The average size of malls here is 2.5 lakh sq ft; this will be 16 times bigger.

The mall - christened Mall of India - will be spread over 32 acres and will have parking space for 10,000 cars.

These ambitious plans have been drawn up at a time when footfalls are down at Gurgaon malls and rental rates have virtually halved.

But DLF is unfazed. It says Gurgaon with so many malls will soon develop as a mega shopping district in the NCR region.

What's the basis of the claim that this will be the biggest in the world?

DLF spokerperson Kajal Aijaz said the biggest now is Mall of America in Minneapolis which has a covered area of 38 lakh sq ft, followed by a mall in Shanghai which is 30 lakh sq ft. Mall of India would be bigger than these, she said.

The DLF mall located on the Delhi-Jaipur highway has been designed by Jerde Partnership which also designed the mega malls in Minneapolis and Shanghai. Its construction work is expected to be over by 2007.

The costs are not known but property consultants said it could be in the region of Rs 1,500 crore.

DLF mall and changing times (none / 0) (#7)
by Unregistered Visitors on Fri Jun 24, 2005 at 08:01:30 AM EST

There is a beautiful proverb among native americans (Cree Indian tribe)that sums up world's thirst for consumption based economic growth and the earth's limitation to support american style capitalism , "Only when the last tract of land is scalped; Only when the last tree is cut; only when the last river is polluted; only when the last fish is caught; only then will they realize that you cannot eat money."

No mattar how ingenious human mind is, it is estimated that you need 4 earths with all the resources to support american lifestyle for all the citizens of the world.

India which is 1/6th the land mass of US and 4 times the population has to find a middle way to sustainable growth. China and India's growth models are putting lots of stress on world's resources already suffering from western worlds consumption habits and are not sustainable in long term as more and more countries try to emulate the same model.

Hey, it is good to have lots of car manufacturing plants and cars to drive economic growth but with no parking places, high fuel prices and no where to drive, only good public transportation can help.

It's a marketting only .. (none / 0) (#6)
by Unregistered Visitors on Fri Jun 24, 2005 at 03:11:43 AM EST

Everbody is claiming to create the biggest mall of the world. Recently there was a news in Times of India about 3 upcoming malls in Shangai which will be world 3 biggest malls. And mall of America is spread over 78 acre of land where as whole DLF Cyber City has just 125 acres.

God knows how they are going to build the biggest as they have not allocated more than 10% of their Cyber City land for this project. They might just build multiple floors but even then they can't claim to build the biggest in the world.

Its going to be just another mall which would be just as big as any normal mall in developed countries.. Indian malls are already ver small in size when compared with any mall in developed countries .. Rest all is just typical DLF marketting.

Mega Mall by DLF (none / 0) (#1)
by Freshair on Thu Jun 23, 2005 at 08:58:30 AM EST

What a waste of precious agricultural land in a country with resource crunch? This is the only thought that comes to mind as our builder (DLF this time) take another shot at the oneupmanship game.

The mall culture is nothing but hedonistic in nature and its sole purpose is to promote crass consumerism.

With so many malls, one fails to understand Haryana government's reasons for granting so much land for development of another white elephant.

We all know that greed and ego knows no bounds but to discard sanity does not bode well for a society that has prided itself in simplicity and contentment.

We should, as Indians, stop talking about how religious we are because none of our actions suggest that we follow much of the wisdom passed over ages by the wise ones. The people only serve Mammon now.

OOPS!!! Its Good afterall (none / 0) (#5)
by Unregistered Visitors on Thu Jun 23, 2005 at 09:38:22 PM EST

DLF is doing a great thing by building the largest mall in world in GGN. It would have the followng benefits:

  1. Increased economic activitiy in the area leading to its development and also increasing business for auxillary industries.
  2. Highlighting GGN on worlds map making it a tourist hotspot. This would lead to more revenuues for the state as well.
  3. It would mean more jobs for the people in the area and that too in the organised sector. Better than being a small player in agriculture with menial unpredictable returns. It would also absorb some unemployed eductated youth - which is good.
  4. More deals and shopping pleasure for the consumer. More chains will crop up and ultimately consumer is benefited. Only chains can offer products lower than the cost price.
  5. Last but not the least, mall is better way of losing agricultural land than losing it to a builder for residential complex. Former, atleast, leads to more revenues and economic activity.

Learning the good things that lead to development of organised sector, more jobs in service sector, more exposure of local populace leading to there personality development should not be seen as aping US. It is learing from an already successful model without any dilemmas.

You are right about not being able to make a difference when change is for worse and not really for better.

I guess a strong democracy, judiciary,a responsive government and an enlightened populace can make the difference but none of it exists in India. So we accept what is shoved down the throat with consequences only for weaker sections of the society.

You are also right about the world moving on but copying a US culture is not in best interst of India with limited resources and land but 4 times the population
