Are there any wine tasting groups in Gurgaon?

If I start one, is anyone interested?

Please bring one bottle of wine per person in your group, and dress in a tie, or formal dress for the Ladies.

Ok - there is obvious interest. Let's do it (none / 0) (#17)
by kevin on Thu Oct 13, 2005 at 10:35:02 PM EST

Hi folks,

I have not disappeared, I have been in HK for a little while but am back in Gurgaon on Monday, Oct. 17.

To Address your questions:

  1. A Wine Tasting Group is a group that gets together and tries different wines with a view to discussing their quality and variety. Typically, it will be sponsored by a wine shop, but for a first run, we can simply each bring a bottle of wine and sample them all.

  2. I can rent a group room at the Bristol Hotel for Friday, Oct. 21st. We can begin at 7pm and go until 9 allowing people to enjoy their other weekend plans. Please dress business formal.

  3. There are a few good Indian wines out there in my experience, but I have also had several poor ones...

Looking forward to Friday evening!

- Kevin.

I can be mailed at klegg@glgroup.com

I am curious about Indian wines. What are some of their names, varieties and prices? Also, do you get Californian and European brands in India?

yes all imported wines are available in india - australian, chilean, european, american (even napa's)
its even better if you know a bootlegger -:)
but in indian brands you have rivieara, sula and grovers.
some of their wines are extremely nice.

Dewars was the one I had before and it was quite good...a bit like the wines from Chile.

What are the prices like in India?
For example a routine Jacobs creek shiraz is about 12 euros/Rs 650.

french wines are close to rs 900-1200 (~$20+)
indian wines are around rs 500 ($10+)
you can get bootlegged ones from embassy's for around $12-$15
i get some australian and chilean ones - they are pretty nice.

How many varieties of indigenous wines are available nowadays in India ?

On my last visit I enjoyed an Indian red with achaar-maththi as much as I had liked the Chianti Classico with olives in the Tuscany region off Florence.

The Indian ones, as expected, were full bodied and left a lasting taste ...

Yes, I would be interested in a wine tasting group. FYI, my favorite type in Shiraz and I think I know the best store to purchase it. I believe it is on the corner of 3 Ave. and Scenic Drive.

Yes, please keep me informed about your plans for a wine tasting symposium.

I had come to accept the thought that wine would be off the radar screen for the duration of my India sojourn. It would be great to discover that I was wrong about that!

Looking forward to more details.
