Traffic Jams on the Roads

By Pradeep, Section Member Diaries
Posted on Mon Oct 16, 2006 at 03:14:56 PM EST

I am just wondering by seeing some common incidents on the Gurgaon Roads and come to the conclusion. Why we are facing Traffic Jams over the roads.

1.    More than 45 to 60% Road users are not following Traffic Rules (Except those areas, where some high rank Traffic Policeman exists). One of good example NH-8, where most of the commuters take diversion from un-identified diversions like under the raw fly-overs etc.
2.    We never respects Signals on the Roads
3.    More than 20-30% Commuters are seems to be stupid or fool, who always take wrong side, whenever a jam come on their regular lane, like this type of more reasons. Sadar Bazar, Rajeev Chowk, Iffco Chowk, MG Road are the good example. In my view this type of stupid should be panelized heavily as they are main cause to create mess on the roads.
4.    Our great NHAI takes most of the time wrong decisions to open / close the diversions. It is also one of the main cause of the Traffic Jam. But this adds only 10%.
5.    For the remaining our Traffic Police and Road Situations are responsible.

In the last, we forgot to add those trucks / buses, which usually break-down on the crossing due to irregular servicing of them.

If we see the trend, most of the case we are the responsible to create the mess on the roads and we are blaming to government. And It is my believe , If we correct ourselves on Point number 1 ,2 and 3 , traffic jams will reduce to 80%. As 4 & 5 exists in most of countries even including developed country.

Traffic jam on the roads (none / 0) (#13)
by Unregistered Visitors on Sun Apr 15, 2007 at 05:25:56 PM EST

The overbridges on the highway NH-8 in Gurgaon built at a huge cost by NHAI are wrongly designed. The traffic lights under the bridges cause traffic jams during office hours when thousands of cars have to enter or exit Gurgaon in a short time.
NHAI should have built Clover Bridges instead for smooth flow of the high volume of traffic, which is a standard practice around the World. May be NHAI wants to spend hundreds of crores of Rupees again in modifying these wrong bridges

I truly agree with pradeep... but still you will find good & bad every where . .not all are good .. not all are bad ... But the problem is to remove the traffic jams & following traffic rules and made some more new laws & rules to eliminate dangerous driving and traffic jams.

To this, I think to stop the tractors, trucks, container loaders...huge trucks plying during the office hours.

This will help in removing traffic jams & to much extent to stop the impatient people to follow the wrong side, as the Stopping period in jam will reduce.

In addition to the rickshaw puller, city busses, three wheelers also drive dangerously.

Thanks.

I think you are very clever and wipe out the responsibilities of Car drivers. Do you know most of the accidents (More than 58%) happened due to lack of driving sense of Car Drivers. I do agree that low speed vehicles should not ply during the office hours. But as such in the NCR, this type of traffic already banned on major roads.

Even-though I am also having 2 cars and sometime myself and my known persons do the same thing as I mentioned in the comments.

Like I have mentioned In Delhi on Ring Road , you cant see low speed vehicles during no-entry time. Further If you talking about the Gurgaon , Iffco chowk , Rajeev Chowk , Sadar Bazar , Hero Honda Chowk most of the places traffic jams due to lack of trafic sense of Car / M-Cyle drivers. Even arnd one month before I saw huge jam near to Hero honda chowk just bcoz of wrong side driving of one maruti alto driver and this jam cleaned up in 3 hrs.

I don't know why everyone pushing blames to those persons which are less responsible for this problem. (May be most of the gurgaonscoop users are car driver / owner and don't want to be blamed. But I am ready to take this blame)

Dear Pradeep,

This is not the matter whether the person is clever or not. It not even the matter to accept the mistakes. The important thing is to eliminate or reduce those mistakes to solve the Traffic Jam problems.

That is why I had written to improve the traffic jams, the slow speed vehicle, huge container loaders should be restriced during the office hours.

It is not the matter that all the car owner are doing the wrong thing .. therefore I had written not every one is good not every one is bad ..

But to put check on the rash/dangerous driving, people breaking the rules, not following the traffic signals by various means .. by imposing speed radars.. traffic cops at major intersection ...  Even I had seen some camera's installed in Delhi.. as someone voilates the law .. the camera clicks the photo .. I have seen such type near safdurjung .. these things can be taken into account to improve the traffic situation ..

Even the call centre vehicles, .. which drive like. . formula 1 racing, zig zag driving, stopping at every where to fetch commuters .. needs to be checked .. I don't know what had happened to that rule, if I am not mistaken, that these vehicle's speed limit is 40 kmph ..

so one can write long stories on this .. but coming back to the original problem .. how to eliminate this .. you & me and others making comments here won't solve the problem, unless the matter is taken with the respective authority.

I hope Pradeep, you are taking this to the respective authority ..

I agree that people do not follow the roads. I would like to add the cycle rickshaws and the buses as well. The private buses will stop anywhere or turn anywhere without indication. This is very dangerous driving. MG road is usually jammed in front of the malls. Reason : The richaw wallahs occupy half of the road for parking their richshaws. Why ? All drivers - 2 whellers or 4 wheelers are supposed to know traffic rules and have a license. What does the law saw aboput the richshaws? These guys come anywhere and turn anywhere. You can see this on MG road where these guys are most dangerous. A request to the traffic police - tame the buses, rickshaws and cycles first and at least 50 % of you problems will be over.

I suggest we all get together and pull all gurgaon rikshawalahs to court of law. They need to learn how to maintain a beautiful city.

I am agree with you all on this point. But I don't know why we are escalte all problems to Rickshawwalals instead of Car Drivers. In most of the case Car Driver break the rule. I underwent this experience on Diwali eve at Sadar Bazar. There is 3 Big Cars , who were not supposed to enter in the Sadar Bazar. Everyone giving the way to those car and shouting to poor rickshawwalas for creating jams. But after my intervention , I asked everyone why we are not shouting these Car Driver. Who entere d in Sadar Bazar , Even knew the fact that Cars are not allowed in bazar in day time.

This type of situation going everywhere and we everytime blaming only the lower class. Even like you mentioned about the MG Road. At this road every big car break the rule.

Although I am not saying that Rickshapuller are innocent. But first we should target the educated persons / elite classs instead of poor person.

Traffice in Gurgaon (none / 0) (#6)

It is terrible to see IT professionals who have to follow coding and sequences at work during the day;only to become unprofessionals when they drive on the road.  It is absolutely terrible and obscene to watch multiple cars committing offences to the hilt unpronounced in an educated country.  If everybody followed a particular lane and the traffic police trained to help ease the traffic, everybody will reach their destination faster then clog the necessary lanes.  Too bad; as selfish as indians can be i do not see any changes will happen in the near future. I thought the rickshawalla and the drivers with no license credntials are at fault because of their poor educational and road sense; but I afraid that this points to everybody up the food chain.  Have one of your transport ministyer stand and direct traffic or drive through one of these raods to find out what he is doing to his city; I am sure he is all to not interested  in whats happensing becasue that is his off time with the family or friends.  Trust me when in the USA, i catch one of you indians drive like your are doing today in Gurgaon, I will promise to teach him a lesson on fines and retraining; for it is true you can't change the stripes on a leopard.

nothing will happen until police become strict.
no one wants to learn either...In USA everybody follow the rule because they know that violation of the rule will lead them to heavy fine and punishment.

in india police is very corupt. we know how to handle police by giving them 100-200 rs.

Trust me guys we can do anything with the help of Govt.

Don't Blame to Police alone. We are the one who give chance to create the corruption. What we are paying to a common policeman just 5K to 8K and taking 12hr job from him and their life is always on stake ( Funny thing , Insurance companies usually not prefered Police and Army personnels). Apart from this providing them a useless house accomdations.

And If any case , they did some good job , they won't get any benefit out of it ( Parliment martyr Policeman are the good example).

In case If we break the rules of road , instead of Policeman asked , we usualy offered the Rs 100 to them instead of ticket.

So it is not right that we blame alone to Police or Govt. As these people are also part of our society.

See with-in ourselve and then blame. You are talking  about the USA , that US CITIZEN are following rules.

There is another reason behind this , citizen of US or any other developed countries , are giving respect to their law and country. Not like us , where we feel proud on breaking of law.
