The Haryana government has decided to set up five bomb detection and disposal squads and five dog squads for Gurgaon and Faridabad districts, in a bid to modernise its policing system before the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The government has also decided to set up a modern surveillance system, police control room add police personnel and computer professionals by April 2008.
To achieve this, the Haryana government has sought financial assistance of Rs 177 crore from the central govern- ment, Haryana DGP Ranjit S. Dala1said on Monday "Security-sensitive installations such as malls and MNC offices have increased in NCR towns. Taking this into account, we have decided to set up five modern bomb detection & disposal squads and dog squads for Gurgaon and Faridabad," the DGP said.
Gurgaon Range, consisting of five districts, has just one bomb detection squad stationed in Faridabad at present. Ill equipped, this squad lacks trained ballistic experts and equipment. The lonely dog squad has just two sniffer dogs for the entire area.

The proposed bomb squads would be headed by an assistant director level official and would include senior scientific officers. Robots, explosive detectors, mine sweepers, bomb disposal blankets, bomb disposal suits, computers, vehicle and X-Ray machines would also be part of the squad.
"The central government has made huge funds available to the Delhi Police for modernising its system before the Games. Foreign guests would use NH-8 through Gurgaon to travel to Jaipur and beyond, and also NH-2 through Faridabad to reach places like Agra, so we need to modernise our system before the Games," the Dalal said.
While speaking on the manpower crunch, the DGP claimed the department was going to recruit 500 computerliterate police personnel. "We have also recruited 500 women constables, ready for deployment by January 2008. We also have 3,700 more recruits under training and most will come to Gurgaon by April next year," the DGP added.
Gurgaon police commissioner Mohinder Lal said Gurgaon required 9,000 police personnel as against existing 2,000. "We have urged the state government to add the average strength of 2000 constables at regular intervals to reach the 9,000 mark," Lal added
