With charity auctions emerging as the order of the day, it isn't rare anymore for the art frat to unite for a cause.
However, the Art for Prabhat exhibition is a tad different. For the canvases will be replaced with handmade art paper made by mentally challenged underprivileged children. The three day exhibition that will take place at Global Arts Village, Mehrauli Gurgaon Road, April 20 onwards. It will have on display more than 200 artworks by over 100 renowned artists, including Laxma Goud, Vaikuntam, Jatin Das, Jogen Choudhury and Sunil Das. "None of A Jatin Das painting to be displayed at the exhibition the artists expressed any apprehension to participate in the exhibition or paint over the paper created by the students of the organisation. In fact, we even allowed the artists to quote the price for their works and share the proceeds with them," says Madhumita Puri, Managing Director of Prabhat In its sixth year, the exhibition is aimed at gathering funds for the Vocational Training cum Production Center, managed by Prabhat, an NGO that teaches mentally challenged children vocational activities like making handmade paper, cloth folders, natural colours for Holi. "The exhibition," Puri says, "imbibes a sense of self achievement in youngsters as they see their paper being adorned with fabulous paintings. Moreover, the funds that we collect are used for the maintenance of the NGO through the year." Twenty three year old Ankur Mehta who has being working in the centre for six years and has participated in the previous exhibitions says, "It is always nice to see the paper made by me being used by prominent artists. Their strokes enhance my art." The artists, meanwhile, are only too game to chip in for a cause. Manisha Gera Baswani who has contributed with her abstract work titled Kidney Bean says, "What makes this different from the usual charity auctions is the fact that we can actually see the money being put to use." Expectations from D day? "What I love most is to look at the artworks," smiles Mehta. About the financial bit, Puri adds, "Last year we managed Rs 10 lakh, so we expect at least Rs 12 lakh this time around." Source (The Indian Express 19/04/07)
