MV Dhurandhar's Self Portrait dating back to 1943 will be placed alongside artist Gulam Sheikh's Speechless City and SH Raza's Rajasthan will go under the hammer with antiquarian books and Pakistani film posters featuring superstars of yesteryears like Sabiha Khanum and Santosh Kumar.
The Masterpieces & ABC Series auction organised by Osian's at the Taj Mahal Hotel on July 27 promises to bring together a unique mélange of some of the best masterpieces in art, books and cinema memorabilia.
However, known to trace and present rare works from world over, this isn't the only clincher that Osian's has managed on this occasion. So the auction apart, the art house will also have on display the Historical Epic II exhibition, where the theme will centre around the 1857 Mutiny, marking its 150th anniversary.
To be showcased at the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre, the highlights here will include a set of antiquarian photographs by Felice Beato, an Italian who arrived in India in February 1858 and toured the scenes of battle in Lucknow and Delhi. In addition chromolithographs belonging to the Chitrashala press hand-coloured lithographs by Atkinson will also be displayed.
Adding to the collection will be the Poster Extravaganza that will be part of the 9th Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema that commences on July 20. In keeping with the focus of the film festival, the poster exhibit too will comprise sections on `Science Fiction and Horror', `Divas from the World of Cinema' and a special segment on `Japanese Posters of World Cinema', illustrating unique oriental aesthetics and intriguing iconography in film poster design.
