The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is in deep trouble over its much publicised plan to sell off 1,168 posh apartments, being constructed in the Commonwealth Games Village for the athletes, after the event.
Two days after a hurriedly convened press meet by DDA Vice-Chairman Dinesh Rai in which a sample house was shown to media persons and projected as a prime residential accommodation, the Delhi High Court has slammed it for the "tearing hurry" in selling off the flats and plans to commence bookings from March 2008. A Bench of Justices A.K. Sikri and Rekha Sharma, hearing a petition filed by ecologists challenging constructions on riverbed on Tuesday, questioned DDA's decision at a time when the matter is "sub-judice" (still being heard) and the court was yet to take a decision on whether to allow the constructions of the flats at all. The Bench has sought an explanation from the DDA within two days. The court's remarks came when a lawyer for one of the petitioner EH. Parikh submitted newspaper reports of the controversial press meet.
"How can you invite a buyer when the court is hearing the matter? We are on the propriety of your action. Is there a question of sale of the flats before the game? Then why are you in a tearing hurry to publicise them?" the court asked DDA counsel Rajiv Bansal. Bansal told the court some flats were under the control of private builders. He said the sale would take place after the Games.
