The Municipal Corporation of Faridabad (MCF) has made public the list of defaulters who owe it house tax of over Rs 1 lakh.
On Haryana Day (November 1) last year, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had announced that the owners of self-occupied houses would be exempted from house tax. However, only those assessees who do not have any arrears on account of house tax as on March 31, 2008, would be entit1ed to claim the benefit A survey is on for the purpose.

In the New Industrial Township (NIT) zone alone, there are 14 assessees - industries as well as individuals. They have a liability of over Rs 1 lakh towards house tax. Their names, along with the amount outstanding against them, have been mentioned on a notice board opposite the MCF head office at B. K. Chowk.
Similar boards have also been displayed in the other two zones Old Faridabad and Ballabhgarh. The MCF has to recover Rs 8 crore on account of house tax from defaulters.
MCF Commissioner R. K. Khullar said the idea is to recover the dues from the defaulters as nobody wants bad publicity "It will definitely help us to recover taxes," he said. A cinema hall tops the list of defaulters with arrears of over Rs 28 lakh.
Some Councillors vociferously raised the issue at the meeting of the MCF House held on February 25. They said that the list of defaulters has not been available in the House. Khullar directed the officials to make the list available by the evening or face action.
Khullar said MCF officials in the three zones have so far recovered Rs 17 lakh as house tax from the defaulters.
"I review the situation every Monday We hope to recover a good amount of house tax arrears by March 31," he said.
