To check power theft, the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) has decided to expose power thieves. The latest measure of the power department is to paint the electricity meters of such people in red colour, so that they are easily identified by the people around them.
The transmission and distribution (T&D) losses of the power department continue to be over 20 per cent despite various measures taken by the department in the past three years.
At that time, the T&D losses were more than 30 per cent.
DHBVN general manager, S. K. Sachdeva, said that the basic idea behind painting the electricity meters red is to expose the power thieves before their neighbours and relations.
"We pasted the names of defaulters on the notice boards of the offices of the power department but that did not help much. Since the electricity meters of consumers are installed on electricity poles outside their houses, passers by can easily see them. The department feels that this measure will have a greater impact," he said.
