To tap the rainwater that goes waste during monsoons, the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad (MCF), in association with the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), has decided to put in place a rainwater harvesting system in Surdas Park in Sector 8.

Though some residents welfare associations have set up a rainwater harvesting system in some parks, this is going to be the maiden effort of the municipal agency in the city.

Recently, MCF Joint Commissioner, Ballabgarh, Pushpender Singh Chauhan, along with MCF Executive Engineer (Drainage) Anil Mehta and HUDA Executive Engineer A. K. Maggu, visited Surdas Park to assess the ground situation.

• The initiative has been taken up because the water table has been consistently depleting in Faridabad

HUDA is maintaining the park. During monsoons thousands of gallons of water gets accumulated at three places in the park. The HUDA and MCF officials were of the view that a rainwater harvesting system should be installed at such places that include the pond and the incline towards Sihi Village that has a tubewell to recharge the groundwater.

The catchment area of the park is over five acres. The officials felt that rainwater harvesting in the park will help in recharging the groundwater besides improving the upkeep of the park.

Maggu said that an official communication from the municipal body is awaited before preparing the estimate for the project.

"We are waiting for a formal letter from MCF to proceed. As soon as we get the letter, we will put it up before the Administrator, HUDA, for his approval. Accordingly, we will prepare the estimate for setting up a rainwater harvesting system in Surdas Park," he said.

MCF has been receiving requests from the residents of neighbouring Sihi Village to fill up the pond that is not only a mosquito breeding ground but has been the scene of many accidents as the children from Sihi swim in the pond.

Setting up a rainwater harvesting system will also take care of these problems.
