LUXURY CAR manufacturer, BMW India Private Limited, plans to become the market leader in the premium car segment by 2010.
According to Peter Kronschnabi, president, BMW India, "In the year 2006, 3,500 cars were sold in the premium segment in India and was increased to 4,400 units in 2007 and in 2008, it is estimated to sell 10,000 units. At present, only two other manufacturers, DaimlerChrysler and Audi are operating in the premium segment of the country."
Till date, the company has invested around Rs 110 crore for its Indian operations and has also increased the production capacity at its Chennai unit from 1,700 to 3,000 units per annum.
The company has also set up an international purchasing office at Gurgaon.
Kronschnabi also added that the company was screening the Indian auto components industry for its plans to make the country a major source for outsourcing for the German car-maker. There is a good potential for outsourcing from India. The three and five series would be manufactured in India. The company also plans to introduce more models in the Indian market.
