The Impression Sikanderpur leaves on the mind of a first time visitor to Gurgaon can never be good even if the high rise buildings are a distraction. Sikanderpur is the intersection that leads to the Mall Road and Bristol Hotel if one goes straight. On the left is the road that leads to Faridabad while the road on the right leads to DLF and Udyog Vihar.
The Sikanderpur stretch is full of encroachments. The road that has already been narrowed due to the construction of the Metro has been further narrowed due to the encroachments.

Slightly away from the road are shops selling water coolers and furniture but more material can be seen on the roadside encroaching upon the space. Then comes the turn of fruit and vegetable vendors who sell everything from mangoes to apples to coconut water Though they take up space in the afternoon only, during the evening their number in- creases tremendously And the problem increases when people returning from offices park their vehicles on the road to buy fruits and vegetables.
Since the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has failed to control stray cattle, cattle can be seen eating the discarded vegetables or rotten fruits. But the interesting part is that inspite of so much encroachment, not a single police constable can be seen in the area leave alone a police beat box.
The increasing number of cycle rickshaws in the area has only added to the problem. Since many cabs stop at Sikanderpur junction, the cycle rickshaw pullers get enough customers for places like Maruti Vihar, Saraswati Vihar, DLF, Mall Road and they earn good money.
"I stay in DLF Phase-I and while returning from office I stop in Sikanderpur to buy vegetables as they are fresh and cheaper than in the market," says Eeshani Mallik, an employee with a software firm in Cyber Park.
After six in the evening, the area is jam-packed but these vendors and shopkeepers provide relief to many through the lights in their shops. Otherwise the whole area is covered in darkness since most of the streetlights do not work.
