Parking charges will vary according to house tax categories. This is the latest proposal that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is considering. So now, if you go to GK-I, Defence Colony or Jor Bagh Market in south Delhi, you might have to shell out more for parking.
And if thats not enough, the revision of parking charges will also mean that you will have to pay more if you park for a longer time. Suggestions of bringing about a graded and differential parking rate was also made by the Environment Pollution Control Authority recently.
The MCD had a meeting with the trader and contractor associations on Thursday to review the parking situation in the city. The suggestion of revising the rate of parking according to the period of time and place of parking was also mentioned in mayor Arti Mehra's report on parking, according to sources.
Another plan mooted in the meeting was that to allow cars of residents of a colony to be parked in the market areas on subsidised price once the markets shut down in case of constraints of available parking space inside the colony.

Said Confederation of All India Traders Praveen Khandelwal: ``We had a meeting with MCD officials and it was decided that in case MCD is having problems in running any of the parking areas, we will take over the functioning there. The MCD had mentioned parking spots near Bhishm Pitamah Marg near Defence Colony and Rajouri Garden. However, we are not too happy about revising the parking rates according to the time you park for and the market place.''
The idea of revising the parking rates in accordance to house tax rates was mooted to discourage people from parking cars in markets areas for too long. Currently, the MCD takes Rs 10 for cars for 10 hours. According to officials, since the amount is nominal, it does not discourage people from parking for too long.
Moreover, the MCD still has to identify parking on the commercial stretches notified by it. Now, the civic agency will be helped by the traders associations in the process of identification.
According to EPCA's suggestions, the city should be divided into four parking categories super premium, premium, moderate and modest depending on property prices in the area and parking demand. Rates should be revised accordingly. It had asked MCD, New Delhi Municipal Council and Delhi Development Authority to prepare their rate charts.
