Gurgaon Police Work On Image Change, gets 2 police companies to tackle crime

The heavy accent of policemen of cyber city Gurgaon has become a cause of worry for the Haryana Police. The city wants its force to be more presentable, a force fit to interact with the cosmopolitan people of this upcoming city .

In this regard, the Gurgaon police commissioner has decided to get about 300 front desk policemen to go through rigorous training in English language to overcome the heavy local accent.

"Ever since the implementation of the commissionerate policing system in Gurgaon, we have been working hard to make our force presentable but we have succeeded at the rate of three per cent only. Apart from other interpersonal social skills, the major challenge before us is getting rid of the local Haryanavi accent," said Commissioner Mohinder Lal.

The commissioner added the Haryanavi accent was hard to overcome compared to other languages. "Earlier also we trained our policemen in language skills at Hero Mindmine but we did not achieve much success. Now we have decided to get them trained by language experts at the British School of Language (BSL)," he said.

Apart from that, a lot of BPOs, including Raman Roy's Quatrro BPO Solutions, have been engaged in training the policemen improve their language skills.

Experts from eBay, Mumbai recently visited Gurgaon to train policemen in various techniques on cyber crime.

Gurgaon has 26 police sta tions and one hi-tech police control room with separate multiple helplines for women and senior citizens.

Several new police stations have been opened in private posh townships also.

"Residents living in these colonies have high expectations from the police and they expect the policemen to present themselves well and speak to their satisfaction," the commissioner said.

"We have decided to fill the gap by rigorous training of our force," he said.

Burden on Society (none / 0) (#1)
by RigidRock on Sat May 17, 2008 at 12:29:40 PM EST

Gurgaon Police is no different from the police in other parts of India. I see our police as a body of cruel and corrupt people that only serves its political and bureaucratic masters. While these words may sound harsh, I personally witnessed torture of a small thief by four police cops in MP last year. My driver had to pay 100 Rs bribe to file FIR for missing mobile phone in Gurgaon which seems to be the `official rate'. While whole police establishment goes mad when we use words like `cruel and corrupt', they just do not want to change and they like it this way too.

In just 30 years, Indian IT industry has become well known in the world but our police organizations have proudly resisted any changes (Kiran Bedi blames it on politics) that will improve its functioning or it is dismal image among the public and the weaker sections of society who need them the most. Child of my maid has been molested in her school bus, but she is afraid to go to Gurgaon police. I do not have to explain you why.

It is a fact that we do not trust Gurgaon police in winning the justice for the people and increasingly I see police losing authority as well. I have seen two shocking incidents recently. A police cop warned an Innova taxi driver for not following his stop signal. The driver came out and pushed the cops after heated argument. Cop did not prosecute him for this unruly behavior.

A motorcycle rider without a helmet is asked to stop by a traffic cop. He does not stop. Cops runs behind him to catch him unsuccessfully. Despite of having service motor cycle and police van nearby they do not attempt to apprehend him for not obeying police orders.

While some of us call Gurgaon a global city, I challenge people to try such things a developed country and get away bit it without a severe penalty. The police bosses, too busy with pleasing their bosses, do nothing to ensure fast disappearing respect for police. If there is a desire to restore the respect then it is by using brutality and fear tactics, and not by solving the problems of people.

Traffic police in Gurgaon is lazy. Traffic Cops keep sitting under a tree or turn their back to traffic if a difficult situation arises. In order to win the respect of people, you have to work for them and your bosses have to work for them.

I think people do not care about the accent of the cops if they help them and control the crime. At this moment the Gurgaon police have to learn proper policing before they learn English. If that is done effectively then we will not require English accent training for the cops. I do not mind hearing Haryanvi accent if I live in Haryana but I would hate English speaking corrupt cop asking for bribe to file an FIR.

IPS officers such as Commissioner Mohinder Lal fast lose touch with the reality, after passing their UPSC exams. They should come on the street to see what the police force is doing on the street rather than impressing the political bosses to get next promotion. If they can not do it and they and the entire police force are burden on the society that has given them this position.
