Final Decision On Weekly Off Day For Markets In Gurgaon On May 14

A meeting called by Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Gupta on Monday, regarding a weekly off day for markets in Gurgaon, remained inconclusive and any decision to be made has been postponed to May 14.

The meeting was called after opposing requests were made to the administration regarding the weekly day off by unions and traders. Around 20 per cent of the gathering was in favour of Sunday as the weekly off, while the rest supported Tuesday. Rakesh Gupta said, "The associations failed to reach a consensus on the issue of the weekly off." He said the weekly off for markets would be finalised next week.

Gupta had also directed Labour department officials to conduct a survey of the shopkeepers. "The sales tax figures of traders have been checked to ensure they have business establishments in the Gurgaon tehsil area," said Gupta. The Labour department has submitted a 400-page report, which Gupta said would be studied and, "Any shopkeepers violating the law will be pulled up in the coming week."

Since the establishment of Sadar Bazaar, the market in old Gurgaon has never been shut and despite the implementation of labour laws in the suburb, shop owners are unwilling to let go of even one day's revenue, said Labour department officials.

Gupta said on Monday: "Till a final decision is reached, the latest orders of the government will be implemented. All commercial establishments not adhering to the weekly off will be fined." As per the latest orders, markets in old Gurgaon will observe a weekly holiday on Sunday, while the markets in DLF, Sushant lok and other areas in new Gurgaon, including the shopping malls, will remain closed on Tuesday.

The state government had issued directions that Tuesday instead of Sunday be made the weekly off, on the demands of various trade associations in Gurgaon. And for the first time, shopping malls in Gurgaon were closed on Tuesday. But other trader organisations demanded that the weekly off be kept on Sunday, so that they could enjoy the holiday with their family.

This suggestion was also forwarded to the government by the Labour department. The state government then decided to keep the weekly off on Sunday for shops and markets in old Gurgaon, where as shopping malls and business establishments in DLF, Sushant Lok and other areas of new Gurgaon were to remain closed on Tuesday.
