The Haryana government is planning to privatise water distribution and fixing slab rates for water consumed. Plans are also afoot to introduce dual pipe water supply in the new sectors coming up in Gurgaon under Master Plan 2021.
At present there is no such distinction in the water supply and residents use the same treated water for their drinking as well as washing and cleaning needs.
While disclosing this on Wednesday, the Haryana PWD (B&R) and Irrigation Minister Capt. Ajay Singh Yaday said a meeting of senior officials of various department had already been concluded on the issue of supplying water to the households through separate pipelines.

"We are contemplating the possibility of supplying treated water from sewerage treatment plants to the households for their non-drinking and cook- ing needs through one channel. We would like to run a parallel channel for supplying drinking water," Yaday said.
Haryana has planned 58 new sectors as per new Master Plan 2021(also called Gurgaon-Manesar Urban Complex 2021) to address the projected population of 37 lakh by 2021.
The water treatment at treatments plants and distribution costs the state government agencies Rs 8-10 per kilo/1itre whereas it charges households at a subsidised rate of Rs 2.50 kilo/1itre.
When asked about the source of water supply for the additional population, Yaday said 800-cusec waster from the Yamuna would be sourced through the NCR Water Channel planned between Sonepat and Gurgaon at the cost of Rs 225 crore.
"This NCR Channel, on which the work has already started, will be ready by June 2009. Initially this would supply 500 cusec and gradually add 300 cusee more," he said. HTC
