The Municipal Corporation of Faridabad (MCF) is trying to be more transparent by throwing all information pertaining to it in the public domain. In a recently held meeting, the House passed the MCF Transparency Bylaws 2008 to allow publicising all important information on a quarterly basis through the mass media.
As of now, a person seeking any information pertaining to MCF has to apply under the Right to Information Act 2005 that mostly elicits half-baked answers. However, after the implementation of the bylaws, MCF will be making such information public every three months through newspapers, television, hoardings and the Internet.
The provision has been made under the agreement between the MCF and the Union government, that has sponsored the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for upgrading the civic infrastructure of Faridabad. Any information on water supply, sanitation, sewerage, stormwater drains, solid waste management, road network, repair of roads, streetlights, parks, playgrounds, taxes collected, zoning plans, ete would be shared with the public.
Residents feel that this will bring transparency in the functioning of the municipal body by curbing the arbitrary use of powers by officials as well as politicians. "Sharing information about the status of various projects and the provision of civic amenities will make the officials more responsible. This will also reduce corruption in the department. Unnecessary interference by politicians in the functioning of the municipal body will also be checked," said Nagarjun Kumal: a resident of Sector 3.
The new laws will also give an account of income and expenditure of the municipal corporation. The municipal body will also make the records pertaining to the various ongoing projects for urban development and city development plan, under the JNNURM, public.
"We will get to know the financial health of the municipal body, and the taxes collected from the citizens and their utilisation for development works," said Sukhwinder Singh Sahney, a resident of Neighbourhood-5.
