Power to people took new meaning in survey,Outages rare in some colonies, routine in othersBy Riti, Section Electricity
Almost eight years after privatisation of power, one could be forgiven for being so naive as to believe that power cuts have been banished. At least that's what the discoms would have you believe. But TOI's `Kissa Colony Ka' survey has shown that in many parts of Delhi going without power for a few hours is a way of life. In fact, almost half of the respondents in 18 areas -- including five NCR areas -- claimed that power disappears for almost two hours on a daily basis. In Gurgaon and Noida, the state boards are the culprits.
So, at one end of the spectrum is North Delhi's Model Town where 97% of the respondents said they did not face any power cuts while at the other end were colonies like Noida's Sector 15/15A, Indirapuram and Vasundhara with an average of four to six hour outages. Aditi Gupta, who recently moved from Dwarka to Model Town, said: ``I think the quality of power supply depends a lot on your service provider. When I was in Dwarka (BSES), we were fed up with the regular power cuts -- it was a daily hassle. I've been in Model Town (NDPL) for over four months now and if the power goes at all, it's not for more than half an hour.'' On the other hand, people in Dwarka said three-four hour power cuts were routine. But in the south Delhi colony of Defence Colony (BSES), it was a different story. Almost 80% of the respondents said they faced outages only when there was a crisis in the city and the cuts lasted for only short durations -- `reasonable' and `expected'. ``Power is not a problem here but local faults can't be helped. Power cuts for long durations are rare,'' said Geeta Bhargava, member of the Defence Colony RWA.
But in GK-II, barely 5 km away, the situation seemed grim. People complained there was no power for an average of two hours daily. ``There has been no electricity for one and a half hours today. Power cuts are a huge problem in this colony, but I feel that we are still better off than several other places in Delhi,'' said Meena Magoo, a housewife in the area. Vasant Kunj got a better rating with the survey reporting that power cuts did take place but not too often. In some colonies like Punjabi Bagh and Karol Bagh, it was a different story from sector to sector -- from no outages to up to four hours. R P Gupta, a resident of Punjabi Bagh, remarked: ``The situation varies as one moves from West Punjabi Bagh to East Punjabi Bagh." The situation in other NCR colonies, too, was much the same. While residents of DLF IV in Gurgaon said they were satisfied, UP colonies like Indirapuram, Vasundhara, and Noida Sector 15/15A seemed to be badly hit. Vasundhara residents are facing over six hours of power cuts daily while at Indirapuram and Noida Sector 15/15A, the ordeal lasts for four to six hours. ``We simply can't survive without an inverter or genset. Even in peak summer, the power goes off for 10 hours. Don't ask how many hours we don't have power; ask for how many hours we have power supply -- the situation is pathetic,'' said Meena Singh of Indirapuram. Vasundhara is just as bad. PK Singh, a shop owner and a member of the residents welfare association, said: ``Hardly any streetlight works and this makes the area very unsafe.'' Source:The Times Of India 15thJuly2008.
