The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on Wednesday told the Delhi High Court that it planned to extend the 42-km Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway till Jaipur.
"The project has been a huge success. There is a popular demand to extend it up to Jaipur and we are working on the plan," the NHAI told the HC. The court was hearing a PIL filed by a commuter, Vivek Bharatram, demanding exemption from toll tax.
Bharatram's lawyer Sahijpal argued that the highway was built on an existing road, depriv ing the commuters of an alternative route.
The Concessionaire company D S Constructions rejected the demand for making commuting along the expressway toll free and termed it "impracticable". The company also rejected he plea for more slip roads and pedestrian crossings on the expressway, saying it would defeat the very purpose of the construction of the flyway.
"There is no such right as free access. Terms and conditions and restrictions can be imposed with respect to the use of any road, particularly the highways. There is no obligation to provide free access on the roads," DS construction said.HTC
