Gap between police & residents widening:Sector 40 open from all sides & no boundary wallBy Riti, Section Gurgaon News
THE RESIDENTS of Sector 40 have expressed concern over poor security in the area and the widening gap between residents and the area police. The Gurgaon Police Commissioner: Mohinder Lal, has made attempts to improve security in the city by keeping a check on non-resident members, primarily in sectors developed by the Haryana Urban Development Au- thority (HUDA).
But there has been little improvement even after forming a group of security advisers in dit^ferent areas. The security adviser-cum-president of Residents Welfare Association (RWA), Sector 40, Ram Swa- roop, said, "The security problem got worse with police patrolling not proving upto the mark and due to the failure of the cops to win the confidence of the residents. Our association met P. S. Rajkumar, the area SHO, and apprised him of the residents' concern about minor thefts and chain snatching cases. Many such incidents are not in the police record. He showed reluctance in coping up with the situation, citing shortage of staff to patrol such a big area." According to RWA members, the government has not shown interest in the security of the sector for many reasons. "Of the total l,200 plots, there is construction on hardly 400 to 500. Maximum plot holders have not shown interest in construction, which has a far reaching impact on the overall security of the sector," said Swaroop. The sector is open from all sides and does not have a boundary wall. People living in the surrounding areas use the sector road as a thoroughfare. The association members have raised the issue of a boundary wall and limited entry and exit points many times with the HUDA. "There is no beat constable. There is no check on the movement of outsiders, scrap dealers and vendors," said K. C. Bharadwaj, a resident. Even the presence of a police station in the sector has failed to boost the confidence of the residents here. "We are doing our best. We take immediate steps whenever needed. We hold regular meetings with associations and discuss various security aspects," said the SHO. There are 30 cops in the police station. Sectors 29, 30, 31, 40, 41, 45, Greenwood City, South City, Kanhai and the NH-8 stretch from IFFCO Chowk to Jharsa Road, all come under the jurisdiction of the Sector 40 police station.
