One look at the surroundings in this market is enough to give one an idea that it's not on the priority list of the authorities. And, over the years, no amount of shouting by shoppers and shopkeepers alike has helped.
A market housing 85 shops and several office complexes, the Saraswati Vihar Housing Board market, located a stone's throw away from MG Road, is in a miserable state. The market is popular with the residents of plush neighbouring colonies and deals in varieties of goods and services. Despite contributing lakhs of rupees annually, little has been done for maintenance of the market by the Housing Board.

Shocking streets
All the streets leading to the market are in a poor shape. The road carpeting has worn out and potholes are omnipresent all over the peripheral roads. "Roads are in a poor condition for quite sometime now. During the rainy season these roads become horrible. At several places, roads go under knee deep water," says Surinder Sahani, a shop keeper. When enquired, Executive Engineer CR Mittal of Housing Board informs, "I am aware of the road problems here. I have sent an estimate of Rs 2.5 core to the state government. Once the state government sanctions the amount, we will start the repair work."
Parking perils
Parking lot of the market is not spacious enough to accommodate the volume of vehicles visiting the market. The parking lot can accommodate only 102 vehicles. "Parking is a grave problem. We earnestly request the authorities to help us in streamlining parking in this area," says Umeed Singh, former president of the market association.
Garbage problem
On the cleanliness front, the market puts forth an ugly picture as well which is evident from the complaints of Gautam Mishra, a regular customer of the market, "The garbage problems are supposed to be looked after by the authorities. We customers will be encouraged to come in to the market if there is cleanliness around. The garbage dustbins have to be kept on the roadsides and cleared regularly."
No street light
Most street lights in the market and adjacent streets are non-functional. After dusk most parts of the market are enveloped by darkness, thereby keeping away the shoppers.
