Food habits and living style of denizens of Faridabad, have undergone a complete metamorphosis

The food habits and the living style of the denizens of Faridabad, have undergone a complete metamorphosis. Majority of them, be they rich, nouveau riche, or not very rich, instead of eating at home and drinking contaminated municipal tap water, prefer to eat outside, or order home-delivery of ready-to-eat food stuff, and drink mineral water, or water decontaminated and purified by acqua guards, or ROs.

Consequently, in the recent past, there has been a mushrooming of restaurants, food joints, dhabas, liquor bars, upmarket state-of-the-art shopping arcades with fine dining facilities, PVR Cinema Halls and other recreational centers. In fact, restaurants have become a flourishing industry in this town. Faridabad was originally set up to settle the refugees who had migrated from the NWF Province of Pakistan. An industrial complex was set up in the NIT (New Industrial Township) to provide employment to the migrants. Since the Pathans were hard working and persevering, they did odd jobs and eventually rose from penury to plenty. Therefore, there are many rags-to-riches stories in this industrial town.

Over the years, the population of Faridabad proliferated from 55,000 in 1955 to over 15 lakh now, which comes to about 30-time increase. Commensurate with the increase in population have increased restaurants and food joints. Everybody gets some sort of employment. Therefore, none of the inhabitants goes without food. Even the lowly of the loweliest does not remain hungry. In the local parlance, there goes a saying about this town: "You come here as a pauper, and go back as a millionaire." And rightly so!

Obviously, man is the artificer of his own happiness. In wet Haryana, a large cold bottle, and a small hot bird, make one rejoice in a cozy bar, or in a well-furnished drawing room. The artificers of happiness have now hit upon sources of entertainment and recreation. Several entertainment joints, restaurants, dhabas, fast-food eateries - such as Guddu Kachoriwala, Chicknet, Epsha, Green Channel, Subhash Bar, Little Paradise, Twinkle Twinkle, to name a few - have come up in Faridabad.

In Faridabad, both the Indian and the foreign (Continental, Chinese, Italian, Afghani) cuisines are available in plenty to suit the pockets of everybody and satisfy their taste buds and palate fine. Guddu Kachori Bhandar is the fancied destination for the residents of Old Faridabad and the neighbouring HUDA sectors, especially shop-keepers, traders and officials, who crowd this food joint every morning for breakfast. Devinder Kumar, a business tycoon of Old Faridabad enganged in Henna trade, said that Guddu Kachori Bhandar was famous for its stuffed kachori and stuffed puri, a speciality, served with green chilli pickle, sauce and specially prepared 'raita,' a real relish. Each stuffed kachori / puri is priced at Rs.5 a piece. And same is the per glass rate of 'raita'. One can enjoy a sumptuous and satisfying breakfast with just Rs.20. There is so much rush of the morning foodies that everyone has to wait for 30 to 40 minutes for his turn. Guddu shuts shop by 2 pm everyday.

Then, there is Chaudhry Puri Bhandar in the posh market of Sector 15. Here too the breakfast crowd comprises the shopkeepers, traders, the employees of the showrooms, banks, etc., and of course the residents of the adjoining areas. Chaudhry serves Puri Bhaji at Rs.20 a plate, a rate which even the people hailing from lower middle class can afford. Ashirwad, and Green Channel, the two well-known vegetarian restaurants in Sector 16, too bustle with fun-and-food lovers day and night.

For the non-vegetarians, there are two famous food joints, Chicknet in Sector 15, and Epsha in NIT. Lucky, the owner of Chicknet, said that since he was quality conscious, he bought mutton, chicken, fish, and sausages, from the wholesale markets of Delhi. The demand for the mutton is so much that by evening he sells the entire stock, 200 to 300 kilos a day. However, chicken meat is available all the time, though its sale too is brisk, he said. Interestingly, ladies comprise his major clientele. Normally, ladies do not go to the butchers' shops to buy mutton and chicken. But in the case of Chicknet, the majority of the buyers are women, hi-fi ladies of the upper strata of society. The speciality of Chicknet is the tandoori chicken legs, priced at Rs.30 a piece, roasted fish, mutton and chicken kebab. After the sun down, one can see a swarm of people waiting for their turn for the roasted non-vegetarian Indian items. One can buy a couple of roasted chicken legs (tangri) with romali roti and enjoy the food either sitting in the car, or standing outside the food joint. Chicknet has the arrangement for the home-delivery of food.

Similarly, in the NIT, the famous non-vegetarian food joint is Epsha. Here is available a special mutton dish which one relishes with savour, besides chicken curry, roasted chicken and fish. Said Bhatia, the owner of Epsha, that his clientele, by and large included the Pathan - migrants of the NIT, very fond of non-vegetarian food, especially the mutton, and the inhabitants of the sectors. His sale is so brisk that by 10 pm he sells out his entire stock and shuts shop. He too has arrangements for home-delivery of food.

Those interested in fine dining in panoramic ambience in Continental, Chinese, Italian, cuisines, go to Pristine Mall, Sector 31, Le Moksha, Parsavnath Mall, Zosse, Crown Plaza, SRS World, Little Paradise, Twinkle Twinkle, Green Channel, Subhash Bar, etc. These eateries lure pleasure-seekers, who earlier thronged to Delhi for evening jaunts, fun and frolic. These restaurants, bustling with the food lovers, supply tasty quality food, hot and fresh, of all means and brands. Many social organizations, such as Rotary Clubs and the Lion Clubs, and industries Associations, generally hold their conferences in the restaurants in the shopping malls, Crown Plaza and the SRS World, etc. The meetings are invariably followed by liquor parties and sumptuous food.
