Bond and real estate markets investors develop taste for global commodities

With stagnant volumes in agriculture commodities and good volumes in international commodities like gold, silver, crude oil, and copper brokerages in India are restructuring their focus towards the latter. This has also been driven by client demand for trade in such commodities which are liquid and extend better returns.

International commodities are those which follow global price movements.

Since the global financial crisis has hit the equities, bond and real estate markets, investors are looking out for alternative investment options which include commodities. Even on the domestic commodity exchanges good volumes are being churned in bullion, energy and base metal contracts like copper.

In last fortnight, the average volume on MCX -- where key commodities traded are bullion, energy and base metals -- have hovered between Rs 22,000 and Rs 26,000 crore. In NCDEX -- a major player in agri portfolio -- volume has been stable between Rs 1,800 and Rs 2,200 crore driven by edible oilseed , guar seed and spices. Most of the active agri commodities are not available for trade on the exchanges limiting any upside in volumes.

Agrees Naveen Mathur of Angel Commodities, saying that they are not seeing a tremendous growth in agri volumes on the exchanges and so their resources in this direction would be limited to what is required for break-even while they enhance their focus towards international commodities. "We are restructuring to utilise the resource pool better and increase our focus in international commodities," he said.

If there are good volumes in any commodity, revenues for brokerages automatically increases as brokerage rates have not changed much in last five to six months. A reason for improved liquidity in commodities like gold, crude oil or base metals is due to good information being available on such commodities which links them well to the spot market and thus generates investor interest.

Even Motilal Oswal Commodities is now focusing more on globally liquid commodities and is imparting knowledge and educating the investors to diversify their portfolio towards precious metals, base metals and crude said Kuljeet Kataria from Motilal Oswal.

All this knowledge dissemination through reports available through media has increased the awareness level of the investor.

Commodities are also drawing investors because of the good liquidity triggered by transparent price and exposure to the commodities, feel the analysts. "It is clients who want to trade more in these commodities now," says Religare Head Commodities-Jayant Manglik.

But Religare is also building its agriculture strength as Mr Manglik feels that once ban on trade of certain commodities and also position limits are removed volumes will be back.
