Securing The Hi-Tech Way To Integrate GSM, GPS And GPRS Technology In Student I-Cards

Resorting to latest technology and technical gadgets, DPS is Integrating GSM, GPS and GPRS technology, by using chips in student identity cards.

To strengthen the security net and increase the safety of students the Delhi Public School Sector-45 has decided to integrate GSM, GPS and GPRS technology in student I-cards. Talking on the same Asheesh Prasad, administrator of the school said, " This is a small component of hardware which will be attached in the student's identity card and through RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), the student can be tracked in the school campus or school bus. Parents will immediately get the information about their kid. If the student is outside the vicinity of the school or the bus, an alarm will ring in the control room and parents will immediately get an SMS."

What prompted the school to take recourse to such measures? Aditi Mishra, principal of the school informs, "Living in troubled times, we are constantly thinking how to improve the safety and security of the students. Nothing would be better than keeping the parents in direct contact with their children even while they are in the school or travelling in the bus. Besides, we are always open to using any new and innovative measures which could have a positive effect on our students."

Admittedly this measure is being implemented for the first time here with DPS being the first to venture in it. It has only been tried in a school in South Mumbai before. "Even the school teachers and staff will have this facility in their identity cards. The students have to deposit a security amount of Rs 2,700 and monthly fees of Rs 250. Once a student passes out from the school, leaving it for good, this amount would be refunded. We are gearing up for the process now and the measure is going to be implemented in March," informs the administrator.

Parents are also apperently satisfied with the this tech-measure. "This is really a welcome step and we are very positive on the school administration taking such measures to strengthen our children's security," says Nilu Sharma, a parent of a student. Does such a measure have any negative effects on the health of the children? Dr K Nath of DLF -IV says, "It is like a mobile phone we use every day. There is some radiation in mobile phone but we are still using it as a necessity. Owing to the security threat, we need such measures. If there is no problem then there is no question of ringing the alarm and no radio frequency radiation. I think there is nothing wrong in it."

Does the school need any sanctions or approvals from the police in this regard? "Since this safety measure is an integral issue to the school, we are not involving the police, we don't require any permission from them," narrates the school principal.

RFID Tags to DPS sector 45, Students (none / 0) (#1)
by manoj1965 on Mon Feb 23, 2009 at 09:05:43 PM EST

I am surprised to know that DPS Authority is issuing RFID tags to DSP students to track them during school hours and BUS Journey. Such decision seems to be taken in hasty and without keeping consideration of side/bad effect of RFID Tech.
It is established fact that using mobile phone (which works on RFID) is strictly prohibited for children. The Govt of India has also issued the advisory to this effect that children below certain age 15 years, should not be allowed to use mobile phone. Whereas school is putting RFID tag in their smart card/school bag, which will have direct impact on them, putting them several healths related risks/problems.
The school has so many teachers/staff at its disposal; they can very well be utilized for keeping vigil/trace the children. In school BUS teacher available can keep the record about the students boarding to the bus from each stop and in school, security guard is available for the same. Rather I would suggest that after Terries attack in INDIA, school authority should think to augment school security by engaging more security personnel for the same, as DPS RKP is trying by putting CISF guards.
I would request school authority to reconsider the issue of RFID tags and stop imeplementing the same for the sake of safety/health of our children.

Hi,

Your information on RFID is wrong!

However, I have better option. There is new technology available today in India - Facial Recognition Technology based biometric solutions. I know M/s. Inttelix Software Technology is have specific solution based on Facial Recognition System. More information you can avail from www.inttelix.com

Any queries, please do write to me avjoson@gmail.com

RFID not same as mobile phone. (none / 0) (#2)
by adpit on Tue Feb 24, 2009 at 05:35:01 AM EST

RFID do not work like Mobile phones.

An RFID tag doesn't even have a battery!

It is more like a barcode, except that barcode reads with a laser reader, and RFID reads with a radio frequency detector. It works at a very short range, so there might be detectors in each bus or at each of the school gates to detect when a kid enters and leaves.

Mobile phones on the other hand have strong tranceivers which require batteries.

I think it is a pretty good way to implement security in a non-obtrusive manner.

Not too far in the future, you might find shops replacing Barcodes with RFID tags (if the price per tag drops far enough). I believe some UK/USA retail stores are already trialing this.

by Unregistered Visitors on Fri Dec 11, 2009 at 01:38:28 AM EST

Hi to all,

Why just debating on RFID technology. I understand there is better technology available today in India.  I know a organization, based at Coimbatore giving solution on Facial Recognition System.

In this case, students can be identified based on their face. its wonderful solution I believe. Why don't you check please - www.inttelix.com
