Dwarka Station To Make Metro IGI Trip SeamlessBy akansha, Section Local Transportation ![]() Delhi Metro commuters headed to IGI using the Airport Metro Express Line (AMEL) once it opens in September 2010 will be able to use Metro Line 3 and then cross over to the Airport line without exiting the former system. AMEL and the other network are run on different technical specifications the former on standard gauge, and Line 3 on broad gauge. The new Metro station coming up at Dwarka Sector 21 will be connected to Line 3 and also to AMEL.
![]() This will be the only Metro station in the entire network in which Automated Fare Collection (AFC) gates and token counters will be located on the platform itself. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is extending Line 3 from the current last stop at Dwarka Sector 9 to Dwarka Sector 21, where the same Metro station will cater to both lines. ``Commuters from west Delhi and Dwarka will be able to experience seamless connectivity to IGI airport with the upcoming Dwarka Sec 21 station being designed in such a way that commuters will not even have to change platforms to board AMEL trains,'' said a DMRC spokesperson. An estimated 40,000 commuters are expected to use the Dwarka-IGI section of AMEL daily in 2010-11 and a majority of these will use the existing Delhi Metro network to reach the Dwarka Sector 21 Metro station. ``To ensure smooth passage for these commuters, special provisions have been made right at the design stage for a hassle-free interchange. Line 3 trains will terminate and AMEL trains will start from either side of the same island platform between the two tracks. Thus, commuters exiting from Line 3 trains will only have to walk across the platform to board AMEL trains,'' the spokesperson added.
Both the lines are run on different revenue models AMEL is coming up on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model and so the fare models too are different. Normally, interchange commuters would have to exit from one line, go to the concourse level to buy fresh tokens and then re-enter the AMEL network. But DMRC is installing token counters and AFC gates on the island platform itself so that commuters do not have to go to the concourse level to buy tokens. A glass barrier will be installed in the middle of the platform to separate AMEL from Line 3. To prevent crowding and confusion, there will be separate AFC gates for Line 3 and airport-bound passengers, separate token counters, and separate lifts, stairs and escalators to access the platforms at the ground level. The Metro station will not have check-in facilities for airport-bound commuters. The distance to IGI station is only 3.5 km which will be covered in about three minutes. ``Commuters will be able to carry their luggage into the trains after baggage scanning. But check-in will happen at the main terminal,'' said the spokesperson. The station will open the same time as AMEL.
