NHAI says while the work is going well on the Haryana stretch of the project, the Punjab government is not cooperating leading to a delay in the construction
As the work to expand the four-lane National Highway-1 into six lanes started recently for the Panipat -Jalandhar stretch, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is facing an unlikely hurdle trees and electric poles at the project site.
As trees and electric poles, required to be cleared by the state government, still stand along the site, the project is getting delayed.
The NHAI has criticised the "sluggish attitude" of the Punjab government, which is not removing the hurdles to ensure smooth operation of the project.
The project, though in its initial phases in Punjab, has already been running behind schedule compared to the neighbouring Haryana, said the NHAI.
Under the Panipat -Jalandhar stretch, a 387-km highway covering nine major districts of Punjab and Haryana was to be constructed including 120 structures like flyovers and underpasses for Rs 2,775 crore in 30 months, besides two service lanes along the highway.
The project, being constructed by a private company under the Built Operate Transfer system, began in May 2009 and is already running late by three months, said NHAI officers.
