Large Scale Construction Activity Has Added To The Discomfort Of The ResidentsBy Riti, Section Gurgaon News
Summer is the worst time for people suffering from respiratory ailments. There is pollen in the air and the dust that swirls with the hot winds adds to the problem. The environment authorities also seem to be unable to bring down the pollution levels. According to some environmentalists and doctors the situation in Gurgaon is especially bad when it comes to air pollutants, like respiratory suspended particulate matter (RSPM) and suspended particulate matter (SPM).
Despite the fact that there are several independent pollution monitoring stations in the city there is little effort on , the part of the concerned authorities to control air pollution mainly from dust, which is a nightmare and problematic. Heavy constructions underway in the city adds to the mounds of dust everywhere. The situation worsens during summer months due to the hot winds that spread this dust and pollen and it becomes difficult to breathe. "In Gurgaon the situation is more vulnerable as pollution is high here with multiplicity of vehicles and constructions all around. In such a situation, one is bound to contract lung diseases such as asthma and tuberculosis," said Dr R. N.Wahi, a practising homeopath and a resident of DLF City . The authorities have also made no efforts to improve the greenery in the city. While most areas are completely lacking in plantation, the degrading Aravali forest and the increasing population has also put too much pressure on the local environment. Now, the population is estimated to be above 15 lakh and a number of schools and commercial establishments have also come up. "About a decade ago, the air was not as polluted as it is now.The concerned authorities and the government have been watching quietly said Riazu ," ddin, a resident of DLF PhaseIII. In the surrounding areas, especially in the Aravali range, the existence of several stone crushers has also added to the dust pollution. According to Dr J. P Singh, . an associate professor at Delhi University who has been actively involved in the Aravali issue, "It is leading towards disaster, as there are no efforts to counter the increasing pollution level in the city." "Lungs and hearts are most vulnerable in such a grim situation. However, we do not have any specific data. Every day we wake up to smoke and dust," said Dr Sudhir Sahay a , consultant physician with a Gurgaon-based clinic and also a resident of the city . After receiving repeated complaints from the people of the area, the Department of Environment, Government of India, asked the Central Board for the Prevention and Control of Air and Water Pollution Control Cell to take some action to examine the situation. However, when asked, Dr Chand Saini, Regional Officer (RO), Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB), Gurgaon, said, "The situation is not at all alarming as we have constantly been monitoring it in the city And those . who violate the pollution act are liable to attract a penalty ." Dr Navin Kishor, a respiratory physician, practising at Max Hospital, Sushant Lok-I, said, "One in every five children aged between five and 15 are asthmatic. However, they do not get diagnosed. From their point of view, it is alarming." Source:Hindustan Times Large scale construction activity in the city has added to the discomfort of the residents
