City Reels Under Worst Power Crisis In YearsBy akansha, Section Electricity Delhi has been struck by one of its worst power shortages in recent history leading to power cuts lasting for 10-12 hours in certain areas. Virtually no area has been spared of long power cuts in this blistering heat.On Thursday, a massive 1,040mw power shortfall threw life out of gear in the capital, triggering protests across the city. The peak power demand touched an all-time high of 4,117mw. What made matters worse was that the 400kv Mandola power station tripped and one unit of the Singrauli plant was shut down, severely affecting life in large parts of the city. Output down 12% in hydel units The Union power ministry has admitted that generation from hydel plants had declined up to 12% due to the dry spell in hilly regions, leading to peak power shortage in the country of 20-25%. About 20-25% traffic lights stopped working causing massive traffic jams. In Delhi University, colleges struggled without power on the first day of admission and the police grappled with the rush of complainants as computers in many police stations went on the blink after the backup also failed. To cap the city's misery, the water crisis continued unabated with DJB officials saying that it was precipitated to an extent by the power problems. Man killed in fight over water
Afight over water led to the death of 34-year-old Rakesh Kumar in Okhla. Kumar got into an argument with his neighbours, which turned violent. During the scuffle on Thursday, one of the neighbours pushed Kumar and his head hit the wall. Kumar, who worked in a factory, was taken to AIIMS where he died on Friday.
Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said the government was ``doing the best that we can''. She has called a meeting of discoms on Tuesday. ``Our problem is overdrawal by neighbouring states and reduced hydro power generation. Monsoon is the only solution,'' said chief secretary Rakesh Mehta. If the Met department is to be believed, rains will not come before the first half of July, which means the power situation will be continue to be bleak for another two weeks.
