From July, Gurgaon To Get 62 Inter-City Buses

By akansha, Section Local Transportation

Bus services in Gurgaon have always left much to be desired. For the state government too, it has been an issue of serious concern with plans and proposals to introduce new buses and improve transport facilities in the city being made frequently.

Now, the roadways department has announced that a fleet of 62 inter-city luxury buses and 200 city buses will ply on Gurgaon roads soon.

While the inter-city buses will start plying by the end of July, it will take a few more months to introduce city buses. "We will be ready to cater to the needs of commuters before the Commonwealth Games in Delhi next year," said a senior roadways official. He added that Haryana government planned to introduce more buses in the next few months.

Meanwhile, Gurgaon residents hope to benefit from the proposal. "We have been hearing about new buses for long and there is hardly anything else to bank upon other than our own vehicles or rickshaws. There is nothing called public transport in the city. Buses are few and far between and overcrowded," said Anusuya Sinha, a resident of upmarket Sushant Lok.

Added another resident, "Connectivity in the city, which generates above 45% revenue for the state and is known as the Millennium City with a population of over 20 lakh, is an important issue. Commuting from the city to the airport and main office areas of Delhi is painful. It is time we are given an effective transport system and not only promises."

According to residents, internal transportation is so pathetic that a large number of people are forced to avail private transport. Remote colonies are worse off.

Gurgaon Roadways Authority, however, believes that the new buses would bring about some change in the present situation.

"We are also planning to replace less efficient buses. We are not giving a time frame for that but it will happen gradually. There would be new air conditioned buses also and for that the infrastructure would be developed," said a roadways official.

"Currently, a large number of roads have to be reconstructed or repaired to increase load sustainability on the lines of Delhi. Also attention needs to be paid to improving the condition of the bus stands," he added.

Virender Sehrawat, general manager, Haryana Roadways, Gurgaon, said things were underway to upgrade the prevailing transport system.

Buses for Gurgaon (none / 0) (#1)
by Unregistered Visitors on Wed Jul 01, 2009 at 01:50:52 AM EST

Haryana Gov has earned lot of money from Gurgaon, Buying 62 or 200 buses is absolutely no problem for them.

But the main problem is maintainance of this fleet. You can already see some of A/c buses plying between delhi and gurgaon, they are in so bad condition, same thing will happen with these new buses.

HR should formulate a contrete policy to cleaniness and maintainance of its fleet
