Plans are on track to build a heliport in Gurgaon to ease the pressure of VIP traffic on the Capital's airports. The Centre has already proposed a heliport near Delhi, and the Gurgaon project is likely to be a joint-venture between Pawan Hans Helicopter Limited, the Centre, and the Haryana government, according to sources in the state government. Pawan Hans is likely to be the nodal agency for the project, top government officials said. Haryana Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary (Transport and Civil Aviation) Samir Mathur said, "The Union Civil Aviation ministry has asked the Haryana government to acquire the requisite land for construction of the heliport in Gurgaon. Between 5 and 10 acres would be required for the project, and the land would be handed over to Pawan Hans to construct the heliport." Mathur said the process of land acquisition will begin soon. The proposed heliport will have more than one helipad, as also facilities like hangars, refuelling, small terminal, crew handling, weather and communication and such, officials said. Though initially planned to be constructed in the National Capital Region in time for the Commonwealth Games starting on October 3, the project did not materialise.
According to officials, the heliport could also have facilities like disaster assistance, emergency medical facilities and quick response teams to meet emergencies. The project is likely to take about two years, senior officials said. Mathur said the Haryana government is also "exploring" the commercial aspect of the heliport. "If we have an equity in the project, the state stands to earn revenue from it. The project will also generate a lot of employment opportunities," he said.
