The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is planning to legalise a number of unauthorised parking lots.
The civic body is contemplating the step to put a stop to the mafia running illegal parking lots, reportedly in nexus with traffic policemen and the civic body staff. The civic agency said so many unauthorised parking sites were running in the city because there was a need for it. It will approach the police commissioner of Delhi to regularise some of these sites. "There are 200 authorised parking sites in our area and I am sure there are 400 illegal parking sites that are being run by the mafia," said Ram Kishan Singhal, chairman of the MCD's standing committee of the MCD. Presenting the budget estimates for 2010-11 at a meeting of the MCD House, Singhal said a large number of parking sites are operating illegally under its jurisdiction.
"A number of parking lots are being run in connivance of the staff of Delhi Police, traffic police and the MCD. We should approach the police commissioner to curb the parking mafia," said Singhal. Singhal said illegal parking sites were being run in some areas where the traffic police did not allow the civic agency to operate parking lots. The MCD has 200 legal surface parking sites in the city, while the number of illegal parking sites is said to be double the number. "If we can crack down on parking mafia, the MCD will be able to earn an additional Rs 200 crore," he said. Recently, the Environmental Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA), which was appointed by the Supreme Court to monitor parking policies in the city, had cut down on a number of MCD parking sites.
The MCD is supposed to make 16 multi-level automated parking sites and 24 conventional parking sites under its green cover. But only 20 per cent of these parking sites will be ready before the Commonwealth Games.
