Wait For G Noida Airport Gets Longer , GoM Meet To Look Into Proposal DeferredBy Ni3, Section GN  BSP supremo Mayawati's pet project, the Greater Noida airport, will have to wait more for clearance as the meeting of the group of ministers formed to look into the proposal has been deferred to August 24 on request of the civil aviation ministry.The GoM was earlier scheduled to meet on July 15. The Uttar Pradesh government had sent a new report on the Greater Noida Airport sometime in late June, which was sent to the Department of Economic Affairs for its comments, based on which the ministry will prepare a self-contained proposal on the mooted facility, senior ministry officials told ET. The ministry has also sent the report to the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), which has modernised the IGI airport in the national capital, for it to give its views, they added. The DIAL has appointed the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), an intergovernmental body that helps to plan and develop global air transport to ensure safe and orderly growth, to study the air traffic for the region. "DIAL will refer the UP government's report to the ICAO. We are also waiting for the DEA's views on the same. So naturally it will take some time. We did not want any party to say that we did not get enough time so the ministry requested for postponing the GoM meeting," the officials said.
The DIAL, which is a consortium led by the GMR Group, has opposed the construction of the Greater Noida Airport saying that it will create competition and hurt the airport operator, which has built the muchhyped Terminal 3 (T3) at the IGI airport with an investment of over Rs 12,000 crore. According to the new report prepared by the UP government, traffic at the Greater Noida airport in 2011-12 will be 8.65% of the total NCR traffic. The earlier report had projected this figure at 7.96%. "There is no business case for the Greater Noida Airport with the T3 in place. Only when the passenger traffic crosses 50 million at IGI airport, will there be a need to think about another airport. At least, for the next five years, there is no need for the other airport," Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) CEO Kapil Kaul said.
The GoM on the Greater Noida airport is headed by home minister P Chidambaram and has law minister Veerappa Moily, HRD minister Kapil Sibal, environment minister Jairam Ramesh and civil aviation minister Praful Patel as its members.
